our Principles

The 10 Principles of Fair Trade, set by WFTO, are “in our blood”. In fact, they circulate through the whole body of our cooperative. We constantly strive to apply them to the fullest in all our activities. Let’s have a look at our brief overview.

01

Creating Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged Producers

Firstly, we reduce poverty by making producers economically independent. We are currently engaging approximately 23,000 farmers in our Fair Trade value chain.

02

Transparency and Accountability

Secondly, we involve producers in important decision making. In addition, through a unique mobile money application, we pay farmers instantly and maximise transparency.

03

Fair Trading Practices

Thirdly, we trade fairly with concern for the social, economic and environmental well-being of producers.

04

Payment of a Fair Price

We pay producers a fair price. In Kenya, for instance, we have helped to increase the nuts in shell price for macadamia paid to the farmer from an average of 30 Ksh/kg to typically 120 Ksh/kg. And, we also ensure socially acceptable wages for our employees.

05

Ensuring no Child Labor and no Forced Labor

Of course, we adhere to the United Nations Convention on children’s rights. All children should be free to go to school rather than working to support their families.

06

Commitment to Non Discrimination, Gender Equity and Women’s Economic Empowerment and Freedom of Association

We reject any discrimination based on gender, religion or ethnicity. Naturally, we respect the trade union rights.

07

Ensuring Good Working Conditions

We provide a safe and healthy working environment for producers and workers in line with the International Labour Organization conventions.

08

Providing Capacity Building

Furthermore, we seek to develop the skills of producers and employees so they can continue to grow and prosper.

09

Promoting Fair Trade

We raise awareness for the need of greater justice in world trade by trading fairly with poor communities.

Respect for the Environment

At the same time, we care for the environment. We maximise use of sustainable energy and raw materials while minimising waste and pollution. And, our environmental commitment goes even further. By planting trees we help to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect the planet.
